The world-famous John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park at MM102.5, established in 1960, protects a 78-square-mile portion of this fragile and beautiful underwater wonderland. Tarpon Basin begins here on the Gulf side and extends to MM101 where it connects to Buttonwood Sound and beyond, about MM98.5.In Tarpon Basin, you can go ashore where the road dead ends in the trailer park, on the south shore of the basin. It's public land. Tarpon Basin: Holding is good, As your enter from the Miami end don't venture to the port side of the ICW markers. If you want to go in to the shore, stay in the cut, but I didn't find anything in there worth seeing. From Miami I normally come into Tarpon Basin, swing right and go most of the way through before anchoring off to the right of the ICW. I have had some good nights in Tarpon and it is indeed very protected. It's deep enough water through Tarpon Basin in the ICW channel. I had no problem anchoring.
