Spy Pond
Took my friend Jon out to Spy Pond this evening. In my 12 years of knowing him, I've taken him fishing plenty of times. He's gotten hit, but has never managed to get a bass.
Most times, I think that shiners and live bait for freshwater fishing is for young kids and old people, but I wanted to get him hooked on fishing, so we hit up Arlington Bait & Tackle and got a couple dozen.
We started off on a private section, sort of in someone's yard but she didn't seem to mind. There were a couple of strikes there. I caught on a Pumpkinseed colored Gary Yamamoto senko. He was about 18 inches or so. This guy had a saltwater line with a swivel stuck in his throat! Must have snapped the line on someone! I tried to pull it out, but was unable to loosen it, so I cut the line as far down as I could and removed the swivel. Hope that hook rusts out and that fish is ok, he was a big one for inside city limits! Dropped another little guy. The shiners, unbelievable didn't get hit at all in this area, so we moved to the other side of the pond behind the Boys and Girl's Club.
We went to a little dock and could see big bass breaking just beyond our cast zone. I went to cast my friend's line and the shiner dropped into the water for a second. Out of nowhere, a little 10 inch Larry popped out of nowhere and snagged it. Boo. What a pain.
We cast out by some new weeds that seemed to have developed in the area, and after losing three or so shiners because, like every n00b, my friend tried to set the hook real excitedly without tightening the slack, he finally nailed one that was about 13 inches. He hooked up with his second one about five minutes later, after going through a few more shiners. I hit a few on my senko, but nothing bigger than 14 inches or so.
Overall, a relaxing day. I wish I still had a boat. There were some big fish chasing minnows to the top just beyond our zone... We got hit a lot today too; definitely felt a bit like the autumn bite...

I have to say, I felt the same way about shiners as you -- up until recently. I go by boat, which I highly recommend at that spot, even if its by one of those inflatable rafts. There are some good honey holes in the open pond. Fishing with senkos is always easy, and at that pond the bass seem to just fall for them every time. For me, it got so easy that I just said screw it, I'm going to try to up the difficulty a bit. So I buy myself some shiners, and a slip float instead of a regular bobber (this is key, I feel -- a slip float rig is great for setting exactly how deep you want the shiner to hang with no re-tieing you line or sacraficing castability). I also hooked them onto size 6 circle hooks, through the lips or just in front of the dorsal fin. I've become a convert overnight. Even when I'm casting an artificial, I now keep a shiner in the water. I've had two fish on at once, and the beautiful thing is that pretty often the circles hook the fish and hold onto them for a long time, even if you're occupied on another rod. The thing about the fish with the old line in his mouth reminds me of another fish in there: I had caught this guy with an old, swollen, curlytail grub sticking out of his throat, and the next weekend i caught - not kidding - the exact same fish. That time I decided to pull on the worm, and with a little finesse I got the whole thing out. Hopefully that fish is able to eat again and live to be caught a third time.
