The majority of the lakes in Citrus County are situated on the eastern side of the county and include Big Lake Henderson, Little Lake Henderson, Lake Tsala Apopka, Lake Hernando, Lake Rousseau, and Lake Holathlikaha. The lakes offer freshwater fishing opportunities as well as recreational boating and even a newly created annual speedboat race. There is boat launch ramp, fish camp, and other amenities. At 19,000 acres, Tsala Apopka is one of the largest, most interestingly beautiful and productive big bass waters in Florida. Tsala Apopka is an Indian name meaning "many waters." Indeed, there are about 50 small lakes (many unnamed) that make up the Apopka chain, which is located in the west-central part of the state near the town of Inverness. But unlike many lake chains, Tsala Apopka is mostly natural, with only a few man-made boat trails or canals leading from lake to lake. There are dozens of islands, hundreds of miles of productive, cypress tree and weedy shorelines, and many "finger lakes" that weave and wind for miles. Anglers even have access to the picturesque and fish-filled Withlacoochee River, since a couple of the lakes in the southern reaches of Tsala Apopka are connected to the famed river. There are more than 30 square miles of open fishing water on the chain, and there's very little lake-side development compared to many other Florida waters. Such an extensive lake chain, with so much shoreline, allows for uncrowded fishing.
